All woodworking and furniture pieces are finished with durable, VOC-free plant based finishes unless otherwise noted. These finish options not only highlight the true natural beauty of the chosen woods, but also keep you free from any harmful chemicals typically found in industrial finishes.
To keep your product looking its very best, follow these care and maintenance instructions.
- Keep surfaces dry. Wipe any standing liquids ASAP. Coasters are great!
- Protect from heat. Avoid placing any hot dishes or food directly on the wood. Use a heating pad or other protective surface. Trivets are also great!
- Wood is a natural product. Avoid extreme temperature and humidity changes and keep pieces in a climate controlled environment to avoid any potential surface distortion.
- Make sure to lift rather than slide objects when moving them. Avoid unnecessary scratches by using felt bottoms on lamps and other decorative objects.
- If an item sitting on your piece is meant to stay in one spot constantly, consider moving it occasionally to prevent any irregular finish fade from occurring.
Care and maintenance faqs
For light dusting, use a dry lint free cloth.
For light cleaning or in case of spill, simply using some warm water and a lightly dampened lint free cloth is suggested.
For deeper cleaning, apply a very conservative amount of light dish soap to clean if needed.
The use of any heavy oil based chemicals is not advised or recommended.
For pieces finished with Rubio Monocoat, Rubio Monocoat Soap / Surface Care Spray is advised to be used.
Never wash your board or tray in the dishwasher.
Boards are to be hand washed only with light dish soap and warm water or Howard Cutting Board Cleaner.
Store boards on their edge or elevated when drying.
Although solid wood furniture can last well into the future with little to no maintenance, to keep your piece looking its very best, the following maintenance care is recommended.
For pieces finished with Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C, Rubio recommends applying Rubio Monocoat Renew. This is recommended to be applied every 3-6 years, or as needed.
For pieces finished with Walrus Oil products, Walrus Oil recommends re-applying a fresh coat of finish every 1-3 years, or as needed. Walrus Oil Furniture Polish can be used for minor touch ups.
The specific duration of time before a re-application is needed will vary based on the level and frequency of use of the piece. For example, tabletops generally benefit from a more frequent re-application than other furniture decor items that see less wear and tear.
Re-application of all brands of finish is typically as simple as cleaning the piece of any dust or debris, wiping the finish on, and then buffing off. Follow manufacturer guidelines and instructions directly for best results.
Re-applying a coat of Howard Butcher Block Oil is recommended every 12 months, or as needed when it starts to look dry.
